In the United States, WDCS is involved in a range of educational
activities…
School talks:
We carry out
presentations and talks to pupils (age 4 – 18) at schools. This popular outreach
program includes slide shows, fun demonstrations and a novel opportunity for
schoolchildren to walk inside a life-size inflatable right
whale! Please contact WDCS at 508-746-2522 or email for fee scheduling and availability. Click here for a flyer giving fees, contact information, and comments.
Supporting Teachers:
We have also run a teacher training course for developing
ideas to use on commercial whale watch vessels visiting the Stellwagen Bank
National Marine Sanctuary. This program has been run in conjunction with
Bridgewater State College and the Sanctuary.
In addition, WDCS US staff
give presentations on whales to adult groups at informal settings including
hotels, Rotary clubs and other evening/weekend events.
See A Spout,
Watch Out! ‘See a Spout’ is a WDCS education project aimed at promoting
responsible boat handling by recreational boat users (as opposed to commercial
whale watch boats) around whales. The programme is focused in the Gulf of Maine,
particularly on Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. It includes
presentations at Boater Safety Courses and the distribution of information
throughout the states of Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire to spread the
word about appropriate boat handling around whales.
The unintended capture of whales and
dolphins in nets is common and widespread, and a particular issue for whales in
the Gulf of Maine area. S.A.V.E. is an innovative 3-year project designed to use
commercial assistance vessels to help keep entangled whales in sight until the
disentanglement/rescue team arrives. This is essential as time is of the essence
when trying to help an entangled whale. If the rescue team is able to head
straight to the whale this can make the difference between a successful rescue
or not. Training of commercial assistance vessel operators began in the summer
of 2004. |
