Help Save Gray Whales!

WDCS is working with the California Gray Whale Coalition to raise awareness and to protect declining numbers of California gray whales. In 1994 the California gray whale population was considered recovered and was delisted from the Endangered Species Act. However, since delisting, scientists estimate the California gray whale population has declined by almost half and are increasingly documenting emaciated California gray whales. It is believed climate change and shrinking artic sea ice are having a direct, negative impact upon gray whales via their main source of pray, amphipods.

WDCS is asking US citizens and California residents to immediately contact your elected representatives to voice your concerns regarding the decline of the California gray whale population.

We ask that all US citizens ask their federal representatives to oppose Senate amendment #4720 to the Flood Insurance Bill S. 2973 because you oppose:

• the lifting of an Outer Continental Shelf moratorium on offshore oil drilling off most of the US Coastline
•the opening Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil drilling,
•the rolling back refinery permitting,
•the resumption of SPR (Strategic Petroleum Reserve) filling,
•the redefinition of Renewable Fuel Standard to include biomass from Federal forest lands and the resulting increase of logging on our public forest lands,
•allowing Department Of Defence to enter into 25 year contracts for synthetic fuels regardless of their greenhouse gas impact

You can find your elected representatives at http://www.congress.org/congressorg/home/

If you live in California, you can also help WDCS by contacting your state representatives in support of State Assemblyman Pedro Nava’s proposed resolution: Assembly Joint Resolution 49 (AJR 49) because you support:

• the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) conducting an immediate, comprehensive assessment of the threats to and status of the California Gray whale,
• the California Fish and Game Commission upgrading the status of the California gray whale from ‘recovered’ to ‘endangered’ based upon the NMFS findings

Thank you for your continued support that allows us to work on your behalf to help save whales, dolphins and their environment. If you have any questions about WDCS’ work please contact us at contact@whales.org or call the office at 508 746 2522 where we will be delighted to talk with you.

Kind Regards,

The WDCS Team
