Dear Friend,

International Whaling Commission 59 in full swing in Anchorage, AK

The Plenary session of the IWC is in full swing and continues through Thursday. WDCS has prepared a detailed brief which can be found at http://www.whales.org/pdf/PressBriefing-IWC595-21-07.pdf.

A series of press releases covering the request by Greenland to increase the quotas and whale welfare can be found at http://whales.org/wdcsPressRelease.asp.

A daily blog from IWC and the WDCS Chief Executive can be found at http://www.stopbloodywhaling.org/blog/index.php. The WDCS is on the ground and working extremely hard on your behalf to maintain the ban on whaling and fight the extension of whaling quotas that are being sought. Some of the team have been in Anchorage since early May. All of this comes at a cost and if you would like to help WDCS continue the fight please make a donation go to https://whales.org/IWCDonation.asp.

Nick Carter of the Back Street Boys is an Ambassador to the Year of the Dolphin

In Washington DC on May 17th WDCS had the pleasure of welcoming Nick Carter as the Ambassador to the Year of the Dolphin in partnership with the United Nation’s Environment Program and the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS). Full information can be found at http://www.whales.org/news/yodNickCarter5-17-07.asp and full details of the Year of the Dolphin initiative at http://whales.org/news/ddInfo.asp

Whale Adoption Project

Sightings have been good so far this season with a good number of whales around. We are working on an update that will be circulated shortly and posted to the web-site.

Jung Von Matt Logo
Dolphin Poster Campaign

A German advertising agency, JUNG VON MATT, has completed some pro bono poster work on behalf of WDCS highlighting issues facing dolphins – please click here to see the posters.

We are now seeking partners who are prepared to print these posters and others who may have bill board space available to donate. Our key markets would be from NC down the coast to FL and along the Gulf of Mexico as well as along the US west coast. If you have any ideas on how we can work together to achieve this, please let us know.

Finally …

Regina, our Senior Biologist, was on MSNBC on Saturday and Sunday, May 26 and May 27, 2007 answering questions about the humpbacks in the Sacramento River and the issues they faced. All the people involved in helping to save these whales are doing a fantastic job in difficult and ever changing and developing conditions. The mechanism they used to administer the antibiotics, to the whales, is a development of the technique and equipment used on Churchill, the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale, the team attempted to disentangle in 2001.

Your continued support is very much appreciated and allows us to develop the work we do on your behalf. Please feel free to pass this email on to a friend – we have had quite a few new members join since February 2007 saying that a Friend had told them about WDCS – thank you for acting as our recruiters, it is really appreciated by all of us.

Regards
