WDCS welcomes the publication in this month's edition of the scientific journal Anthrozoos of a new paper by Lori Marino and Scott Lilienfeld of Emory University, Atlanta. Dolphin Assisted Therapy: More Flawed Data and More Flawed Conclusions updates their 1998 paper reviewing dolphin assisted therapy. They conclude that "nearly a decade following our initial review, there remains no compelling evidence that DAT is a legitimate therapy or that it affords any more than fleeting improvements in mood."
WDCS has a number of concerns about dolphin assisted therapy or DAT, not least because it is fuelling the capture of dolphins from wild populations about which little is known and the confinement of dolphins in captivity.
