Call for action to protect right whales
Following the death of another North Atlantic right whale off the coast of Georgia, USA, WDCS has renewed its plea for action to save this endangered species, of which less than 400 individuals remain.

Vessel Collisions and Cetaceans - A Report From WDCS
WDCS is concerned by recent evidence which suggests that collisions between
vessels and whales, dolphins and porpoises (cetaceans) are happening more
frequently than previously suspected and - particularly in the case of
endangered or geographically-isolated populations - may pose a significant
conservation threat.

Follow Up on Canadian Fisheries Issue
Despite numerous emails sent from people all over the world asking Canada to postpone the opening of their fisheries unil endangered North Atlantic Right whales could leave the area, the Canadian government decided to go ahead with the proposed opening. We are continuing to send emails to the Canadian government in protest. |

Bans All Gillnet Fishing To Protect Right Whales (2/15/2006)
After
scientists determined that a young North Atlantic right
whale died last month after becoming entangled in gillnet
gear, the NOAA Fisheries Service will prohibit all gillnet
fishing off Georgia and northeast Florida through the end
of the endangered mammal's calving season. |
